What has been happening over the past month?

On the 1st of March I gave a talk at the BCF store at Campbelltown and there were about 150 people at the store on the night. The main focus of my talk was on estuary fishing with baits. I cover items like “Why you should use a leader of between one to one and a half metres in length”, “The importance of whether to peel or not to peel a prawn”, “Various types of rigs”, “What types of hooks to use” and “What is a good outfit to use when either fishing off the shore or out of a boat”.

My next talk for BCF will be at their Auburn store on the 6th of April. It will start at about 7pm and go to about 9pm. Hope to see you there.

Greg Reid from Bay and Basin Sportfishing Tours and Tuition was also there and gave a talk on lure and bait fishing in St Georges Basin and the surrounds. If you are thinking of going down that way have a look at Greg web site http://www.bayandbasinsportsfishing.com.au/

Or go to his BLOG and catch up with what’s happening in his local area bayandbasinsportsfishing.blogspot.com/ and while you are there have a look at some of the great fish that has been caught by some of Greg’s clients.

On the kayak fishing side of things I'm really pleased to announce that they have finally got the I's dotted and the T's crossed from the relevant authorities and we will be launching our NEW kayak fishing tours in the very near future. The first 50 people to book onto a guided tour will receive a "Hobie pack", containing a shirt, hat and accessories. This is really exciting for both Greg and new kayak guide Darryl Head. Darryl is an extremely experience canoe and kayak guide and has been operating tours on the upper Shoalhaven River for more than a decade. All kayak tours will be conducted on the calm waters of St George's Basin and the upper Shoalhaven River for bass; in fact they have access to private property on the river. Stay tuned for more.

Check out the picture of Darryl’s 90cm St Georges Basin tailor.

If you would like to know what’s the latest up on the PURE FISHING (Pflueger / Shakespeare) web site go to www.purefishing.com.au and have a look at the following:

Some of the Pro Anglers are Andrew McGovern, Brad Hodges, Neil Schultz, Mark Mangold, Stephen Wilson, Me and many more.

You can also view video clips on Pure Fishing TV (PFTV) on how to rig up a whole pilchard onto a set of ganged hooks, strip baits, whole and peeled prawns, squid and worms. There are also plenty of other clips, for example, how to use blades, squid jigging and bream on soft plastics and surface poppers.

If you are interested in getting a newsletter to also keep you up to date on what’s happening on www.purefishing.com.au all you need to do is subscribe to their newsletter and they will keep you up to date.

I have been receiving reports from Andrew Hestelow, Stelco Pty Ltd at sales@stelco.com.au for quite some time now and I am sure that Andrew wouldn’t mind if you ask to be included in his mailing list for his very informative fishing reports. When you get a chance check out the different reports that he has had emailed to him. They came from Brisbane, Broken Bay, inside and outside of Sydney Harbour, Victoria and even Lake Eucumbene in the Snowies.

One of these reports came from Sean who writes:

Picked up 3 wahoo yesterday, all around the 10kg mark. Jigged up 4 kingies, only 2 legal (biggest @70cms). Biggest thrill of the day was a live bonito under a balloon getting whacked by something very big; it took nearly a full spool of 50lb braid in what seemed to be less than a minute. There were a couple of large (65+kg) yellowfin taken in the same area a week prior, so I suspect that’s what it was. I got absolutely smoked; but there’s always next time…

There are also some great marlin shots, a report from Lake Eucumbene and even a you tube report on how useful down riggers are.

As usual there is so much in Andrews report the next chance you get have a look at what has been happening at http://www.downriggershop.com.au/

2 NEW BOOKS THAT ARE AVAIABLE FROM TACKLE SHOPS AND AFN.
For a while now I have been working on two new books for AFN and in the last month they have now been released and they will be in your local tackle shop.
The first one is Fishing Guide to South of Sydney and to give you a bit of an insight as to what the book is about you should read on.

INTRODUCTION
For those of you that have never ventured to this beautiful part of the NSW coast it is something that you need to put in your bucket list of things to do. There are hundreds and hundreds of places that you can wet a line on the south coast and in this book I have put together a series of 31 maps and about 460 fishing spots to help you to explore the near south coast of NSW.
Places like Bass Point, just south of Shellharbour. This rock finger of land is a natural gathering ground for many different species that juts out into the passing currents. Some of which are, snapper, bream, drummer, tailor, Australian salmon, pike, silver trevally, kingfish, bonito and groper, just to name a few.

If rock fishing is not to your liking you may like to explore the Shoalhaven River from either the shore or out of a boat. This river is southern NSW largest and most significant river that rises between Braidwood and Araluen, flowing north and then east for over 400 kilometres, entering the sea near Greenwell Point.

Now when it comes to lakes you may like to visit the little township of Lake Conjola that is situated just north of Ulladulla right on the coast. The lake empties into the Tasman Sea and most of the times are crystal clear. The lower section of the lake has extensive sand flats which are great for large dusky flathead, whiting and bream. Largest Lake in the area almost permanently opened to the sea. However the sea entrance in dangerous and not navigable. 3 boat ramps around the lake for access for small and large boats.

There is nothing like feeling you get when standing on a beach as the suns rises over the horizon, while the lapping waves of the surf laps at your feet. One of my favourite places to do this is at Racecourse Beach at Bawley. There is plenty on offer here for the beach and rock angler. It is a place where you could base yourself and explore both north and south of here.

It has taken me a few years and plenty of blood, sweat and tears to put this fishing guide together and with its 31 maps and over 460 fishing spots I hope that this information will also help you to expand your fishing horizons to the areas that I have fished since I was 14 and are still fishing with my many fishing friends to this day.

The second book that AFN have released in How to Catch Australia’s favourite Saltwater Fish written by me, with contributions from Geoff Wilson, Bill Classon, Nigel Webster, Leanne Payne, Andrew McGovern, Warren Keelan and Brenton Hodges.

In this book I cover History, Biology, Location, Tackle and various Techniques of the following fish species. Australian salmon, tailor, bream, flathead, kingfish, leatherjacket, luderick, drummer, mulloway, snapper, trevally and whiting.

REPORT FROM GOT ONE AT PORT STEPHENS.

GAME FISHING

Last week was the final week of competition for game fishing this year with the Nautilus Boat Insurance Interclub Tournament finishing on Sunday. Conditions were extremely rough on the Saturday with 30 knot southerlies forcing officials to call off the third day. Sunday conditions were better and back out the boats went. A total of 335 fish were tagged and released over the two weekends, 214 marlin were tagged with the rest being shared between other species, and the biggest shark weighed was a 331kg Mako. Once again Port Stephen’s was the victorious club with the number one team being the best over the tournament. Standout of the two weeks was the Force with the crew tagging 12 marlin taking out most marlin tagged over all, most fish 2nd day and most marlin 4th day also young Corey Wilson on board took out small fry champion angler. A top effort from the boys clearly out fishing everyone in the tag and release division for marlin. Since the weekend the fish revved up with a good inshore bite on, one boat in particular caught ten fish on the Gibber on Wednesday with more marlin being caught only a few miles straight out the front. Latest reports today from some anglers is the water has dropped since then and things have been a little quieter, try wider they suggested as the water is blue and warm, there is a nice warm water eddy off lake Macquarie as I speak.

OUTSIDE
Up north around Seal Rocks this week has seen some fantastic fishing with some big King’s and good Snapper and Jewfish on the chew, up towards Skelton Rocks being the pick of spots. Further south the Gibber is still producing Trag and Snapper it seems the Trag have taken up permanent residence there this year so far with some quality late season Snapper amongst them. Schools of Stripe Tuna and Bonito are still thick working bait balls in close around the islands out the front. Down south Trag are feeding on Uralla and Uralla Wide, and I’ve had some reports of some good Jewfish taken around Fisherman’s Bay and decent Snapper wide on Fisho’s bommies. Sunny Corner has some cracker Kingfish buzzing around the wash taking fresh Squid baits and Bishop Metals. The sand drifts in 20 Fathoms from Broughton to Boat Harbour
is alive with sand Flathead you can’t beat fresh Bonito strips on a paternoster rig for filling the esky with Flathead.

ESTUARY
This week the fishing in the estuary has been really good; Flathead are feeding aggressively with reports of quality Duskies being taken from the top end of the system up at Karuah, North Arm Cove and Tilligery on fresh pilchards on the run out tide. Bream and Whiting are taking surface lures around the Islands west of the boat ramp at Soldiers Point across the weed flats, Lucky Craft Sammy’s in clear ghost or Ghost Minnow being one of the best surface lures for chasing Bream and Whiting on the surface with a great action they get results. Middle Island and Corlette wreck is continuing to hold smaller school Jewfish. I managed three on Wednesday on whole squid with some regular customers getting them on the Wreck and Island through the week. I find on the smaller tides at present it seems to give more fishing time for them resulting in more fish, cooked up as Thai fish cakes they go down a treat. Shoal Bay down past the boat ramp there is some nice Sand Whiting being caught across the sand flats on live tube worms, Squid are hanging around the moorings on dark. Schools of Tailor and Bonito are still thick smashing white bait on the surface particularly around the Anchorage and the deep water behind Middle Island. For some great surface action fun, flick poppers into the bust up’s on your Bream gear with a 10lb leader and hang on.

ROCKS
The best action this week on the rocks has been coming from Boat Harbour with reports of good King fish buzzing around Sunny Corner and along Boaty Point. Blackfish are on the chew on the points in the wash with cabbage been the pick of the bait, the odd nice Drummer and Bream on royal red prawns or cunje as well. Squid are hanging around the kelp on One Mile point and Tailor on dark. Stripe Tuna, Bonito, and Tailor are smacking metal blades off Tomaree with some Long Tail being spotted on Tuesday screaming past the point but with no hook ups. A customer reported to me he landed a good Jew off big Rocky Point on live Squid at night and dropping a good fish to, the tailor are thick on dark there as well.

BEACH
One Mile Beach has been red hot again this week with good reports of school Jewfish being caught in a nice gutter running along the beach on the top of the tide along with Whiting and Bream. Middle rock is holding the odd Blackfish and Bream in the wash. Whiting and Bream are on the chew in gutters along Stockton Beach with some smaller school Jew on dark. Good as usual the southern end of Box beach is fishing well for Bream and Tailor.

OUTSIDE
The game fishing has been red hot this week with plenty of Marlin on the bite and good success in the Luhrs Bill Fish shoot out last weekend. A total 108 marlin were tagged and released And 10 fish weighed, the twenty thousand dollar fish went to Seeka weighing in at 157kg’s, another was weighed 159kg’s but was knocked back due to disqualification with leader issues. Tim Dean on Calypso took out most Marlin tagged and released and was hard to beat with his depth of local knowledge, Shane Wilson and Chris “Mustard’ Blanch had a good weekend on Full Force, Boasting 10 from 16 bites on Yellow Fin Tuna in 500 Fathoms before being entertained by an impressive Sail Fish and a solid Dolphin fish as well as a two bites without success to Marlin on Saturday. Sunday saw a turn in luck tagging a good Stripe and an estimated 250lb plus Blue. The Yellow Fin went down superb on Sunday night as sashimi washed down with a few beers. Blanchy recons the Yellow Fin were so thick they were like pods of Dolphins surfing the swell and was impressive to watch.

After the weekend the fish are still on the chew with some South Australian customers getting fish every day since Monday including some quality Dolphin Fish , Iona Game Fishing Australia reporting three from four bites yesterday one fish Tuesday and a Blue measuring 255 girth length on Wednesday plus Some good Dolphin Fish and more schools of Yellow Fin. Will Malloy and Ivan on Ambition had a cracker day during the week staying clear of the influx boats ,hooking five Marlin from five bites to 120kg trolling skip baits early and bombing livie’s in the afternoon. Conditions are looking well for the Interclub this weekend with the fish on the chew, deep blue water and temps at 24.5 degrees there should be some good results. For any last minute supply’s or red hot deals on Tiagra’s or Dredges look for our Got One store in the main tent on Sponsors Day Friday March 4th, Good luck .
The 21 has fished well during the week with good catches of Snapper, Trag and some solid King Fish, Stripe tuna have been in close around Broughton Island belting metals thrown their way and some big Bonnies, squid are thick and hanging around the kelp at the Sisters and Coal Shaft Bay. Using the latest Yo-Zuri and Yamashita natural skin colours will increase your catch rate on Squid they come at a cost but results are great. Schools of big King Fish are buzzing around the Sisters, Cod Rock and North Rock with customers getting into them at cod rock on live slimies. The Gravel patches in 45 fathoms produced some Jew Fish to 8kgs with Jarred on Full Stick doing well out there this week. Snapper are on the chew in deeper water around Fingal Island and Boulder Bay and further south to little Rocky.

ESTUARY
The high light of the estuary this week has been some good catches of solid Jew fish along the Nelson Bay Breakwall, spinning big soft plastic lures and using live squid are the best methods for Jewies along the wall, fish have been landed to 12kgs and all at night. Inside the Marina the Bream are on the chew early morning, floating peeled small school prawns around the moored boats are producing the fish. Bonito are still busting up through the bay with smaller schools of Tailor spinning Maria or Bishop blades around the 25-35grams are most affective for a feed of Bonito in the smoker.

Flathead are still sun baking across all the weed beds throughout the Bay with good numbers being caught after the recent rain washing them out of the creeks. The Myall river and around Pindimar, Duchies Beach and the Corlette Groins are holding good fish. Whiting are still about west of Barnes’s rocks closer to the short cut entrance early on live worms across the sand flats, just got some fresh live tube worms in the shop as I speak. Jimmy’s beach is fishing well as usual for Whiting and some solid Bream up around the rocks on Yaccaba, Wanda Head has been fishing well some cracker flat head on ganged pillie’s good bream and a few school Jewfish on dark on fresh mullet strips regular customer John did good there on Tuesday night. Hard bodied stealing Bream are still schooling around the rocky bars around Soldiers Point, North Arm Cove and towards Karuah. Tilligerry has been fishing well along the banks for Flathead and Whiting and some nice size Blue Swimmers in the upper reaches.

ROCKS
I have heard rumours of Long Tail Tuna being landed off Tomaree this week finally, the bait is there so I wouldn’t doubt it. Striped Tuna are in close and the land based crew are having a ball throwing Bishop Blades amongst the bait balls and landing fish to 5kgs ,these fish go hard in close and will surprise the best of people once spotted up close as to what there fighting. Stripes will take pillies of the rocks but metal blades work best. Tailor and Bonito are still think around the wash; Squid are about off Boat Harbour and Fisherman’s Bay. Big King’s are still cruising around the rocks with Tomaree, Sunny Corner, and Mile Headland being the hot spots, live baiting on a float or floating a fresh squid is deadly when chasing big Kings.

BEACH
Stockton Beach is full of Whiting in the gutters on high tide at the moment and some school Bream amongst the washes, fresh live worms or pippies on a two hook surf rig thrown into a gutter and bang your own. Good reports of Jew to over a ten kilo’s are swimming up and down the beach, tin city down to the Sigma being the prime spots, fresh mullet strip’s or gang hooked pillies catching the smaller fish and live whiting are catching the larger fish. Middle Rock and Samurai are still producing Bream and Whiting; Tailor at North Samurai on dark, Middle Rock is holding some nice Bream and Tailor. Fingal Bay is holding Whiting in the gutters live worms a must and is a prime spot to plant yourself at night with live yellow tail or big strip baits on dark for big Jew this time of the year, north of the life guard tower up to the spit being the prime area.

Report from Paul Martin rocksmarine@tsn.cc

There were testing conditions early last week with some pretty strong South Easters whipping up the ocean out wide. Most of the action was off Grassy with some nice Spanish mackerel coming out of the close grounds. Spotties were quite again with only a few caught off the Northern reefs. Fair Snapper and Trag were caught out of the same area. Mark, Trevor and his mate Peter Bowen form the Central Coast fished towards Rocks in Line for 2 Spanish and a nice Dolphin fish. The FAD is still not producing Dolphin Fish apart from the odd one. There were Marlin hook ups in front of the Gaol last week as well as the odd Wahoo and Yellow Fin. Slimy Mackerel are still hard to find so Yakers are your only choice. Pilchards are doing the job.

The river has been fishing ok with some nice Flathead coming out of Clybucca and Stuarts Point, while drifting the break wall has also been productive. The South Wall has some fair Bream coming off it on the change of tide. Whiting have been around Jerseyville, Clybucca and up river to Kinchela. There are plenty of Herring about to use as live bait for that big Jew or Flathead. There is still the odd School Jew about with the Cut Through fishing well.

Smoky and Gap Beach have a heap of Dart coming in with the odd Whiting, Bream and Tailor out of the surf. Small Jew Fish and some nice Bream have been on the Hat Head end of Smoky. There are some Blackfish turning up along the ledges. Tailor are about but there is no size in most of them while Bream are in fair numbers off the Gaol.

At Anglapro we started our design process by contemplating you! What seats would you prefer to sit in, how would you like your dash laid out, what fishabilty needs do you have? From there we got started on building a good hull. So in short we built the boats backwards starting from the driver seat and finishing with the hull. So the result is love at first sight with the layout, then you get in and head for the horizon and its all smiles because the boats just perform in all conditions!
We keep our hulls simple by design, no catchy names for the hull to make the boat sound tricky. We know a hull must achieve 4 main results.
1. Plane easily with minimal hole shot effort
2. Corner comfortably
3. Offer stability at rest
4. Be comfortable underway though choppy seas

I have just got back from 3 days in the Hunter Valley and 4 days up at Port Stephens. While up AT Port Stephens I had arranged a charter with Rohan from Castaway Estuary Charters. The plan was for Rohan to show myself and Dave Tosland places where we could target bream and duskies in the Port Stephens area with soft plastics and hard bodies.

Even though we had a couple of days of overcast weather Friday turned out crystal clear and after meeting up with Rohan at the Soldiers Point boat ramp at 7am we set off for the Tea Gardens area to fish a small, but very productive rock bar. It wasn’t long before I pulled in a couple of bream of about 500 grams each on a Gulp 2 inch Banana Prawn Shrimp. Dave also managed to get a few bream and a couple of small flathead.

I was very impressed how Rohan used Minn Kota I pilot to keep the boat in the prime casting areas along this wall, so much so that it enable Dave and I to be able to land our surface poppers and soft plastics right of the breams nose that were feeding in about 15cm of water.

We then moved further upstream to a small island and worked the flats and a couple of submerged reefs, oyster bars and old disused oyster racks. The depth of water here varied from about two metres to about 30cm’s. Dave picked a couple of bream while using Gulp 2 inch shrimps and I managed a lone bream on a 3B Scum Dog.

The wind came up a bit which put paid to fishing a couple of areas that Rohan wanted to take us, so we ended up a small reef near the boat ramp at Soldiers Point. The falling tide was creating an eddy on the deep side of the reef where the bream and flathead were laying in wait for anything that came over the edge. We picked up a few bream and 1 lone flathead that pulled the scale down to about 4.3 kilos and measured in at 80cm. Not bad on a 2-4 kilo Pflueger Trion rod, mounted with a Pflueger Medalist Reel, spooled with 3 pound Crystal Fireline and a 4 pond vanish leader.

If you are ever up at Port Stephens and you haven’t got a boat with you or you have no idea where to take your boat to go fishing in the Port Stephens area give Rohan from Castaway Estuary Charters a call and book a trip out with him. After our morning with Rohan I sure you won’t be disappointed. Check out Rohan’s web site at www.castawayfishing.com.au or email him on castwayfishing@bigpond.com

Our morning’s effort produced 12 bream, 4 duskies to 80 cms and 1 just undersize snapper. We also had a pod of dolphins go past us.

I would also like to thank Paul and Steve from GOTONE Tackle Store at Port Stephens for putting me onto Rohan from Castaway Estuary Charters.

Australian Fishing Network AFN (Publisher)http://www.afn.com.au/

For over 20 years the AFN has been the publisher of the premier fishing magazines in Australia. In their continuing efforts to bring the best fishing magazines, books, maps, DVD’s and other exciting products to the anglers of Australia and around the world. The Australian Fishing Network has added to its range some exciting new products. With more magazines a year there is always something new to offer every angler. Take some time to browse the www.afn.com.au site and help them to plan your next fishing trip.

AFN have an online book shop where you can purchase one of my books, DVD’S AND map that I have produced for AFN over the years. Or you can send them an email to find out which tackle shop that sells their produces that is closest to you.

What has been happening over the past month.

On the 1st of March I will be giving a talk at the BCF store at Campbelltown, so if you are interested put this date in your diary and come along. There will be a few other guest speakers there on the night and I will let you know who they are as it gets closer to the night. I travelled down to BCF at Nowra to give a talk on Beach and Rock fishing on the south coast of NSW and they had just over 250 go through the store over the night.

Greg Reid from Bay and Basin Sportfishing Tours and Tuition was also there and gave a talk on lure and bait fishing in St Georges Basin and the surrounds. If you are thinking of going down that way have a look at Greg web site www.bayandbasinsportsfishing.com.au/ One of Greg Reids happy clients

Or go to his BLOG and catch up with what’s happening in his local area bayandbasinsportsfishing.blogspot.com/ and while you are there have a look at some of the great fish that has been caught by some of Greg’s clients, especially Graham Parker now has a PB red of 72cm to 4.5kg to brag about.

REPORT FROM GOT ONE AT PORT STEPHENS.

OUTSIDE
There is a shitty dirty strip of water pushing down from the north as a result of the Qld floods however there are still some fish about. Encouragingly Dollies have been taken in the fresh tide, 25ยบ in close in 70 – 80 fathoms and if you get out over the dirty strip there has been a bit of slack tide due east outwide of the shelf in 1000 fathoms where the Dollies are going berserk and all fish are in the 20-30kg range! Deeper below the Dollies there have been some nice BigEye averaging 60-70kg’s mixed with a bunch of 30-40kg YellowFin. Earlier this week pushing down in front of the dirty water one boat took a good Sailfish and had a session with some Wahoo. Another boat also fishing the slack water far wide of the Almark had a few shot’s on Blue Marlin and Wahoo. Inshore the water is still dirty green around 19° but there’s been action at the Gibber, 21 and north of Seal Rocks. Peter Bradbury of Rock Lobster fame fished north of Seal for a bunch of nice Snapper and a good Bag of Trag. Another local fisho did well around the Gibber in 60 metres for more Trag, Pearl Perch and Snapper, whilst the reports are similar at the 21 with a bonus few Kings and Jewies about. There are plenty of smaller Snapper around the reefs at Broughton and plenty of bait about.

ESTUARY
Middle Island again produced good numbers of school Jewies during the week. These fish are up to 70cm and best fished on the change of tide. The larger fish up to 10kg have moved up the river and the bridges at Karuah have had some daytime action. A couple of Sydney based boats managed a 10kg Jewie at the first bridge whilst another boat fishing the second bridge hooked a great fish but unfortunately blew it due to tackle failure. The Nelson Bay Breakwall has been full of smaller Kingies with some cranky bigger ones still about, fresh squid, poppers and small blue blades have been doing the damage. There are heaps of good Flathead around Soldiers Point, Pearson Park, and deeper west at Tilligerry, Tanilba Bay and Oyster Cove. Whiting still thick most places throughout the Estuary, Live Worms or Dyna Bait is doing the trick. Tanilba Bay is producing some better Blue Crabs not thick but large. Good sized Squid are amongst the weedbeds around Shoal Bay and there’s still some around the lights in Dalbora Marina at night.
BEACH
Green Hills, Fingal Beach and the Spit are still the spots for Whiting, whilst in the Bay, Shoal Bay, Dutchies and across at Jimmies and down at Taylors Beach have still been firing. Further south with your 4WD try Samurai & Stockton they are both producing nice Flathead & Whiting. “Bat’s surf popper rig” has produced the goods again. 12k’s down Stockton, one very happy customer taking numerous Flathead on the bait, Tailor on the popper then Salmon on the bait and School Jew on the popper. Just another successful surf rig exported from Adelaide to giddup the NSW local beach fishing (grin).

ROCKS
Earlier the water has been green and cold with conditions that haven’t been too flash out the front. The keener rock hoppers are fishing more to the south as the nor’easters have been painful. Some large Drummer have been caught at Boaty, Fisho’s, Morna Point and Shark Bay at Fingal. A 1.5m south east swell is running and the water is clearing up for the weekend. There are still good Tailor, nasty Kings and a few Snapper off Sunny Corner.

Report from Paul Martin rocksmarine@tsn.cc
Things are slowly starting to clear up here with the river still sending down some debris in the way of small logs and weed. With the bigger tides happening over the week conditions should improve substantially. There have been some good reports of bottom fishing around the DOT and areas further out for quality Pearl Perch, Snapper and Jew Fish. There has been a few reef fish up off Grassy but unfortunately no sign of any Spotted Mackerel or Spanish out of the green water. Fish Rock has started to become active with a few Kings about with the odd Snapper and good numbers of Bonito and Mac Tuna. Water temp has dropped a little, let’s hope it returns quickly and be as good as it was before the fresh.

There has been plenty of action in the river. School Jew are in good numbers up river around Kinchela taking live worms (remember 45mm minimum) because there are a lot of fish undersize. Whiting are also on the bite out of the same area. Further down around Jerseyville Flathead, Whiting and small Jews are about. The Break wall is tough to fish with the fresh flow but there has been the odd Flathead and Bream from the Tavern down to the mouth. I have not had any reports of big Jew out of the river but the conditions are perfect for them so it’s just a matter of time.

The beaches are clearing up nicely with Smoky Beach fishing well for Whiting, Bream and Dart. Back beach and Main beach have Whiting but it’s hard to find a legal one. Rock hoppers are getting a few Tailor while the water temp is down a little. A few small Kings and Tuna are coming in off Hat Head.

They have a new Plastic Bait called Pin Tails, definitely worth a look.
Check your safety gear and take care on the bars.

I have been receiving reports from Andrew Hestelow, Stelco Pty Ltd at sales@stelco.com.au for quite some time now and I am sure that Andrew wouldn’t mind if you ask to be included in his mailing list for his very informative fishing reports. When you get a chance check out what can happen to your car if you forget about the tide coming in (what a mess), the best way to rig the Head Start device. For those not familiar with it, this is a plastic bib and weight assembly, which fits over the garfishes head and, when trolled or downrigged makes the bait swim with a tight wobble, exactly like a bibbed lure and don’t forget to go to Andrews latest report at http://www.downriggershop.com.au/

Over the years I have had an enormous amount of support from my sponsors. They have stuck by me and supported me in many different ways. So when you get a chance, go and visit their web sites and have a look at what they have on offer. It is not all about fishing and boating gear, it’s also about how to articles, suggested techniques to try out, competitions, what’s new, plus much more.

(Anglapro boats)http://www.anglapro.com.au/

Web report 20/11/10
For a while now I have been working on two new books for AFN and in the last month they have now been released and they will be in your local tackle shop.

The first one is Fishing Guide to South of Sydney and to give you a bit of an insight as to what the book is about you should read on.

INTRODUCTION

When I was 14 years old my parents brought a block of land down at a little sea side village called Gerroa. We used to spend every weekend travelling down from Sydney to Gerroa to either go surfing, fishing while at the same time building our holiday home. It was during those early years of my life that I got the opportunity to explore the 200 kilometres of coastal shoreline, rivers, creeks, dams and land locked waterways from Wollongong to Batemans Bay.
For those of you that have never ventured to this beautiful part of the NSW coast it is something that you need to put in your bucket list of things to do. PURE FISHING has just upgraded their PFTV WITH Gatesy’s Tournament Talk, Mango’s Pre Fish and Berley Basics by me.

REPORT FROM GOT ONE AT PORT STEPHENS.

OUTSIDE
There’s no shortage of Sand Lizards on the drifts out the front of Fingal and wide of Broughton with quality flathead to 2kg coming in. Snapper are also in numbers with the best reports coming from Seal Rocks around Edith Breakers and the Saddles. Big King Fish in the 20kg plus class roaming the shallows around Broughton. There are smaller Kings on the Gibber, Vee and 21 reefs as well as Trag and pan sized Reddies. Drummer to an impressive 4kg are about in the white water around Big, Little and Fingal Island. Squid are in hospital bay at Little Island and Lighthouse Bay on Fingal Island, Jigs that seem to be working best are pink and orange Yo Zuri’s and Yamishita’s in the 3.0 to 3.5 size.

BEACH
Salmon numbers have jumped up over the past week with some really big schools getting along Stockton and Fingal. Best way to get stuck into a few fish cakes is casting and retrieving whole pillie’s and garfish or metal lures in the 30-60g range. Cracker Tailor are also moving up the beach with both Fingal and Stockton producing some monsters for this area to almost 4kg. Whiting are still building in numbers each week as we get closer to summer live worms are always your best bait for these tasty critters and don’t be surprised if you also pick up a few bream.

ROCKS
There’s been some thumper Drummer getting caught especially around Fingal down to Rocky. There are reports of Pigs getting caught at Tomaree as well as a few late season Luderick. Squid are coming from Barry Park at Fingal and also Boulder Bay and Boat Harbour. Tailor and kings along the point at sunny corner as well as stacks of Salmon.

ESTUARY
If you’ve ever wanted to catch Bream and Whiting on surface lures now is the time as the water temp has risen inside the bay to well over the 20 degree mark. Surface lures such as the lucky craft Sammy’s and Pencil’s as well as Norries Treju’s and Jackson T Pivots are just some of my personal fav’s for this type of fishing. Live worms are the other way to get a feed of Whiting. Just focus around the shallow sand banks amongst the weed beds on the high tide and you should manage a feed of Whiting. Bream are still along the rock walls at Nelson Bay and around the Anchorage. Flathead are filling into the bay best areas to fish for Lizards right now is Tilligerry through to Karuah and around North Arm and Fame Cove.

Report from Paul Martin rocksmarine@tsn.cc

More rain more dirty north easterly’s, we must be due for some stable weather soon. Early during last week there were some cracker Pearl Perch being caught off Scotts Head. There are a number of small Trag about with the odd Snapper off Grassy in fairly close. The current is running down south at a rate of knots bringing some warmer water with it. Fish Rock has been fishing well for King Fish most are on the small size but there are some around the 8 or 9 kilo mark. Once again out wide has not been an option so the results from the FAD and wider is unknown. There is plenty of live bait out there so when the conditions come good it should start to fire up.

There will be more fresh in the river after the latest drenching but it hasn’t put the Whiting off the bite with some good results coming from Jerseyville to Smithtown. Through the Cut towards Stuarts Point, Flathead have been in good numbers. The size is not really there they are just good pan size. There has been some nice Bream along the Break wall taking live worms, Mullet and Whitebait. Clybucca has been producing some good Flathead and Whiting on a run out tide. Herring are gun bait for these Flathead.

Smoky beach has a huge sweep at the moment which is making it tough to fish. There has been a few Whiting and Bream on the beach if you can put up with the conditions.

More on the Fish Rock lockout; on the 27th of November there will be a flotilla protest around the Rock and hopefully we will have a large number of boats in tow. Media have been organised and will be there on the day.

I have been receiving reports from Andrew Hestelow, Stelco Pty Ltd at sales@stelco.com.au for quite some time now and I am sure that Andrew wouldn’t mind if you ask to be included in his mailing list for his very informative fishing reports. WEB REPORT 3/10/10

TACKLE AND TECHNIQUE TALK.

Back in September this year I gave a talk at Fergo’s Tackle World store at Taren Point.
The evening was designed for beginner and intermediate anglers and the areas that I covered were the following:
• How to use soft plastics and blades to target winter and autumn fish species like bream, silver trevally, whiting and dusky flathead.
• Deep and shallow water spots to try in the Sydney region.
• Suggested rod and reel selection.
• Types of knots used to join superlines (e.g. braid) to your leaders, jig heads and blades.
• Types of leader material.
• What techniques to use.
• Times and tides.
• Suggested types of jig heads, plastics and blades.
To give you a bit of an insight as to what I covered over the night I will go over some of the techniques that I covered.

VINCE JOYCE - THE WINNER OF A DAY ON THE WATER.

Deep and shallow water spots to try in the Sydney region.

By deep water I mean anywhere between 5 to 12 metres of water. Even though I knew the areas that I was going to fish I used my Hummingbird 788CX COMBO GPS to help me, not only pin point my position, but to also help me locate the bait and fish schools. The first area that I concentrated on was at the entrance to the Lane Cove River in Sydney Harbour. The water depth varied from 7 to 13 metres and most of the fish came from a small drop-off at the 10 mark on a run-out tide. Both Vince and I used a ¼ oz TT Switch Blades and 1/6 oz Berkley Big Eyed blades, along with 1/6 and ¼ oz jig heads with 6 inch Gulp Camo Sand Worms (cut in half).
The technique we used was to cast as far as we could in the direction that we were drifting and allow the blade or jig head to reach the bottom. It was then just a matter of slowly lifting the rod tip so theta the blade or jig slowly bounced off the bottom and then sunk back down. Bream were caught on the lift as well as the fall of the lure.

Shallow water areas will range from half a metre to 5 metres in deep and can be in the back areas of bays or in the main channels. They can have weed, sand, mud, broken shells or a combination of a couple or all. They can also be rocky outcrops, rock bars and mussel or cockle beds. The size of the blade or jig head will depend on the current. For example if the current is running quite fast you may use a heavy jig head like a 1/6 oz or if it is fairly slow you may come down to a 1/20 or 1/16oz jig head. You may even use a deep or shallow diving hard bodied lures and don’t forget to try those surface lures as well.

Suggested rod and reel selection.

I have found that the best rod and reel combination for this has been my Pflueger Trion 2.1 metre/ 2 to 4 kilo rod, mounted with a Pflueger Supreme XT2500S reel spooled with Berkley 3lb Fireline Crystal and a 4lb Trilene Fluorocarbon leader. The reason behind this is that, not only has the rod got plenty of power in the bottom section of the rod, there is still enough sensitivity in the rod tip to feel even the slightest of touches. This flexibility in the rod tip will also give the angler a bit of a cushion when the fish lunges in the other direction while trying to get away.

Types of knots used to join superlines (e.g. braid) to your leaders, jig heads and blades.

This is where I keep it very simple and use only two different knots. The Uni and Double Uni knot. The Uni Knot is used to tie on the jig head or blade and the Double Uni Knot is use where I join the Fireline Crystal to the leader. What I also make sure is that when I am going to cast that the knot between the mainline and the leader is located somewhere between the bail arm of the reel and the first guide (stripper guide) on the rod. The jig head or blade will be hanging about 30 to 40cm down from the tip of the rod.

Types of leader material.

95% of the time I will only use Fluorocarbon for my leaders, the other 5% of the time I will use a floating line when using surface poppers and lures. The breaking strain size will depend on whether I am fishing over sandy or mud bottoms, muscle or cockle beds, oyster racks or oystered covered rocks or whether the fish are a bit shy when taking the lure.

I was told that there was close to 200 people at the talk and at the end of the night there were a number of lucky door prizes drawn. The major prize on the night went to Vince Joyce (a local angler) who won a day on the water with me in my new boat learning how to put all the techniques that were discussed on the night into practice.

Late in September I took Vince onto Sydney Harbour out to put theory into practice. We managed to pull in a number of small snapper, bream and the odd trevally. Places that we fished were the deep water off Spectacle Island, where Vince hooked up to a good size kingfish on bream gear. Even though Vince showed a lot of skill in playing the kingie on bream gear when the leader material parted company after the kingie found some bottom structure in about eight metres of water.

We also fished under a number of boats and beside marker poles in the Lane Cove River. We also spent some time fishing the flats and boats of Hen and Chicken Bay.

The techniques I took Vince through were deep water jigging with blades and soft plastics, casting at moored boats and fishing the flats. Vince also won a pair of Monsoon Photochromic Polarized glasses from UglyFish sunglasses, which he has already put to good use when chasing fish out of his Hobbie Kayak.

Fergo’s Tackle World put on a number of these information nights over the year, so if you would like to subscribe to their news letter I would suggest that you go to their web site at www.tackleworld.com.au and find their store at the store locator drop down box. Once you open their home page you too can subscribe to their newsletter.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF SOME VERY IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE FISHERIES RULES THAT CAME IN ON THE 1/09/2010.

Edition 76 September 2010

Minor changes to recreational fishing rules in NSW: Fisheries Management (General) Regulation 2010

The Fisheries Management (General) Regulation 2002 has been reviewed as it was due for repeal on 1 September 2010 pursuant to the provisions of the Subordinate Legislation Act 1989. The new Fisheries Management (General) Regulation 2010 is now in place under the Fisheries Management Act 1994 to replace the 2002 Regulation.
As a result there are some changes to recreational fishing rules in NSW from 1 September 2010, which are detailed below:

1. Changes to gear marking requirements and setting of recreational traps and nets:

Lobster traps, crab traps, hoop or lift nets and spanner crab nets
• All floats/ buoys must be labelled with name and address of the person who either sets, uses or lifts the fishing gear,
• floats/ buoys must measure not less than 100mm in all dimensions,
• the minimum height of the float/ buoy must be at least 50mm above the water,
• all letters to be a minimum of 15mm and in a colour contrasting to the buoy,
• the name of the gear (or an abbreviation) to be marked on float/ buoy. ‘CT’ = crab trap, ‘LT’ = lobster trap, ‘HN’ = hoop or lift net, ‘SN’ = spanner crab net.
• All lobster traps and crab traps must have a 50gm weight attached to the buoy at least 1m below the surface so that no rope is floating on the surface of the water.
• Hoop nets or lift nets and spanner crab nets must not have any rope floating on the surface of the water.

Bait traps, yabby traps and shrimp traps

• a tag must be attached to a part of the trap which is at or above water level with dimensions not less than 80mm x 45mm, with the
• name and address of the person who either sets, uses or lifts the trap,
• all letters to be a minimum of 15mm and in a colour contrasting to the tag, and
• the name of the gear (or an abbreviation) e.g. ‘ST’ = shrimp trap, ‘BT’ = bait trap.

Note: If a stake is used to mark the position of a yabby trap, the stake must be identified with a tag, in the manner described above. If a buoy is used to mark the position of the trap, the buoy must be marked in the manner described above (no weight on rope required).

2. Change to bag limit for Cobia
The bag limit for Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) has been reduced from 20 to 5.

3. Removal of minimum legal length for Sole
The minimum length for sole has been removed. Note: the minimum legal length for flounders remains at 25cm and a combined bag limit for flounder and sole remains at 20.

4. Removal of maximum size of landing net
Recognising the common use and the importance of large, fine mesh landing nets for catch and release fishing, the maximum size of the frame of a landing net has been removed from the regulations.

5. Reduction of the infringement notice amount from $200 to $75 for the offence of fishers not having their recreational fishing licence receipt in their possession when fishing

Recreational fishers are required to pay the recreational fishing fee (or licence as it is commonly known) before they go fishing (unless otherwise exempt). Fishers required to pay the fee must have the official receipt for the payment of the fishing fee in his or her immediate possession when fishing from any waters otherwise they are guilty of an offence under section 34J(2) of the Fisheries Management Act 1994.

The infringement notice amount for this offence has been reduced from $200 to $75. However, fishers must have their licence receipt in their possession for immediate production when fishing. If approached by a fisheries officer, only in exceptional circumstances will provision be provided for fishers to produce their licence receipt at a later date.

The above changes will come into effect on 1 September 2010. All current NSW recreational fishing rules are available at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF SOME VERY IMPORTANT CHANGES TO THE SPEED LIMIT IN THE DARLING HARBOUR AREA THAT WILL APPLY FROM THE 11/10/2010.

A new 4 knot speed limit, reduced from 8 knots, will apply to all vessels entering Darling Harbour from the north cardinal mark, Darling Harbour Island, on the western shoreline across to the southern end of the overseas passenger terminal on the eastern side of the shoreline.

Local Fishing report

Fergo’s Tackle World at Taren Point

Congratulations to Ian Phillips our hard working staff member from the Wollongong store who, fresh after claiming first prize in the recent St George Basin Flathead Classic on a 3” Riptide Mullet, has also just won the NSW division of the Pirtek Fishing Challenge on exactly the same lure.

The Pirtek challenge is open to every angler in Australia and boasts a first prize of $4000 so to take this out is an amazing achievement by Ian.

The 3” Riptide Mullet is perfectly matched to a Berkley 3/8 oz Pogy Head because it fits neatly inside its cupped face which in turn helps it stay on and presents it perfectly.

Ian’s one of those rare fishermen that doesn’t mind sharing his knowledge ... so come in and ask him for some tips.

Fishing reports...

• Plenty of Marlin have been seen and caught recently with both Blues and Stripes making a showing and Jo Yee Apollo’s have accounted for more than one of them.
• Good numbers of Kings in close and off the rocks. There will be a few guys throwing the new Sebile stick baits and poppers at them no doubt.
• There have been Northern Bluefin Tuna in close up to 20kg.
• Jewfish up to 15kg being taken on plastics off the rocks and beaches.
• Large number of Bream, Tarwhine, Reds and Flatheads down at St Georges Basin on Gulp 2” Prawns, 3” Riptide Mullets and Blades.
• Bream, Flathead and Jewfish on Squidgy Pro Fish in grasshopper colour in the Shoalhaven.
• Blue Swimmer Crabs are still being caught in large numbers at Lake Illawarra and the Port Hacking.
• Small Jew, Flathead, Trevally, Bream, Whiting and small Snapper are still prevalent in both Botany Bay and the Port Hacking. With water temperatures being persistently warm, it looks like being a really long season this year.
• Fly fisherman have been catching Brown Trout up to 3kg on Black Nymph and Globugs in Eucumbene River as are drift spin Fishermen.

LATEST REPORTS FROM AFAR.

Paul Lennon from the Got One Store at Port Stephens portstephens@gotone.com.au reports the following:
NSW 01 October 2010

Paul the dreaded fishmaster is still in Kadavu Fuji until late today …. but he is back tomorrow! (grin) …. The swells down for the weekend, little cloudy & some wind, check out seabreeze.com.au.

OUTSIDE
Alistair from the Vanessa S reports quite a few 30kg Big Eye’s outwide this week, mixed in with them were plenty of thumper 50kg plus Yellowfin. The water temp has been around 21.5 with plenty of rat Yellowfin around 30-40kgs along the shelf. The last moon also raised a few Swordfish around 50-70kgs and a Striped Marlin was also taken during the week. There are still mega Bonito out the front of Fingal Is, Got One staff member James Moss with his brother Andrew having a competition - the winner being the person who could cast and NOT catch a bonito! There are plenty of Sand Flathead in the 30 to 40mtr range north of Broughton, Squire are about around the Islands out front with some nice lure caught Snapper coming from Edith Breakers.

BEACH.
With the warmer weather during the week Whiting around doing well at One Mile, Samurai and Shoal Bay along with some nice bonus Bream & Flathead. Live worms are the go for Whiting off the beach, use a size 4 chemically sharpened long shank hook for better results. The best being the rising tides either dawn or sunset. Salmon are thick from Stockton to Fingal along with a few better Tailor. Stockton this week has raised a couple of better Jew on live beach worms
ROCKS
Kingfish have been doing damage at Sunny Corner and we have had numerous reports all along the coast up the Fingal. Most anglers have been targeting these fellas with live Squid, Slimey’s, or Yakka’s under a breakaway float, however there have been lots of lost fish taking metal spinners chucked at Bonito, Tailor or Salmon. Blackfish are still prevalent along the Southern Rocks particularly Barry Park and Boat Harbour. Fisho’s targeting Drummer have been doing well off Tomaree and there are some nice Squid in the shallows at Fingal and off the rocks at Fisho’s.

ESTUARY
There were a couple of Jewfish taken off Nelson Bay Rockwall during the week, showing the results of some dedicated night time sorties. Live squid is the go, fished into the night round the rising or change of tides. The blackfish guys are also still doing well there and you get the benefit of being able to fish either side of the wall if the wind is up. Flathead are still about within the Bay, the water temp up at 19.5 when I fished it during the week. Best areas would be west of Garden Is towards Karuah, along the banks of the Myall & Tilligerry Creek. If you’re after Bream with the water temp up be sure to give the surface a go around the racks within the Bay.

Paul Martin from Rock Marine Bait and Tackle (rocksmarine@tsn.cc) reports that last week our Bar has been a little angry through the week with some blue water fisho’s preferring to stay in the river rather than take on the white water. Those that ventured out were rewarded with some nice Snapper off the northern reefs as far up past Scotts with the odd Pearl Perch in the bag. There were a few reports of good Snapper in about 50meters off Grassy with a few Morwong and Trag. King Fish are in good numbers around Fish Rock taking live bait and Knife Jigs with some absolute crackers. Mac Tuna and Bonito are plentiful.

The river is fishing well for bruiser Bream along the Break Wall using light gear with Pilchard cubes going well, you will lose some gear but it’s worth it. One nice Jewfish was caught off the wall last week going about 15 kilo, the big ones are few and far between but schoolies are in good numbers. Blackfish are scarce with the odd one being caught from back creek and the river. Big Flathead are about in the flats luckily I have seen the photos instead of the frames. Clybucca and Stuarts Point have some nice pan size lizards with a few Bream off the oyster racks. Chopper Tailor are in the river biting the tails off your plastics. Herring are everywhere at the moment.
The Rock Ledges have had some big swells coming in making it a little dangerous. Tailor and monster Salmon have been common with a few Sharks in close. Whiting have come on to Smoky Beach with the odd Bream and Tailor. Main beach has Whiting and Bream taking live worms with the odd Flathead off the beach.

(Anglapro boats) – www.anglapro.com.au
